Great Lakes Palliative Care Support was formed in 1989 to provide support for people in need of 24 hour palliative care. Regular consultations with staff of Forster Tuncurry Palliative Care Nurses, Forster Private Hospital and Mid Coast Assist ensure that help is given where it is most needed to people of the Great Lakes Shire in need of palliative care or who have a life-limiting illness, and to their families. The aim of palliative care is to help the patient focus on quality of life by offering advice, support, together with pain and symptom control. Emotional support is also offered to all members of the family and friends.
Some of the help which is available to support palliative patients:
- Extra nursing and domiciliary services for those who wish to stay in their own home as long as possible.
- A store of special equipment is available for free loan to provide greater comfort at home.
Great Lakes Palliative Care Support continues to extend the services that it provides, and since 2011 has been involved with the establishment of the Oncology Unit in Forster Private Hospital. This unit enables the residents of the Great Lakes to receive their chemotherapy treatment and/or other services in their local hospital.
The dedicated Management Committee is assisted by our Auxiliary Members. All give generously of their time and talents to ensure that Great Lakes Palliative Care Support is able to continue its valuable work.
Great Lakes Palliative Care Support is proud to be generously supported by a wide range of community groups.
